School Visits

Robogals arranges for our university student volunteers to visit schools to run free LEGO robotics workshops and other workshops. In these fun and educational classes, students learn the basics of engineering, robotics and programming using LEGO Mindstorms EV3 kits. We also run engineering related workshops which don't require computers.

These are the activities that we run:

1. LEGO Mindstorms Robotics workshop: This consists of

  • LEGO Mindstorms basic programming (making it move and make sound) Duration: Roughly: 1 hour
  • LEGO Mindstorms advanced programming (using sensors and line following). Duration: Roughly 1 hour
  • LEGO Mindstorms building. Duration: Roughly 1 hour (this can take longer)

Usually given only one hour we do just basic to advanced programming or given two hours we may do building and basic programming. We are very flexible to what you would like the kids to learn.

2. Engineering workshop: The kids have to build a contraption for a challenge! Past engineering workshops have included building a bridge that a robot can drive over, and elastic band powered cars.

3. Interactive presentation. The presentation contains a couple of activities and videos displaying what engineering is and how it relates to the world around us. This takes roughly 1.5 hours and we can accommodate larger groups of kids for this - up to a whole year group.

The programming workshops can accommodate up to roughly 30 students per session. We bring all the resources required including computers.

The purpose of these workshops is to give girls a general idea of what engineering is about and to provide a fun, hands-on engineering experience. The workshops are FREE for schools and run by volunteers from UWA.
